Introduction

In our approach to portrait painting, we will begin by looking at the techniques of one of the most respected portrait artists of the 20th century, Lucian Freud.  Besides studying and using his physical techniques and mental approaches to art, we will also "read," discuss, and write about painting as artists do, using the specific vocabulary and language of the trade.

Assignment

Look carefully at the Freud portraits in the left column below, scrolling all the way to the bottom.  Using the "Artist Analysis Sheet," describe what Freud does differently and uniquely from other artists, finishing with a statement that you believe would accurately summarize his philosophy of art and the artist.  The famous portraits in the column on the right are provided simply to help you identify Freud's uniqueness.  Do not comment on those.
